5 Reasons Why I Won’t be Getting the New iPad

Apple announced on Wednesday the latest member to its tablet family: the new iPad. (You heard right, it’s called the new iPad, not the iPad 3.) After record iPad 2 sales last year (15.4 million were sold in Q4), Apple quickly acted on the momentum to produce a new-and-improved, top-notch tablet.

But how much of an improvement is the new iPad? The new-and-improved updates include the HD retina display, 4G LTE capability, A5X chip and a few others. And whether or not you believe the $500 price tag is worth it is for you to decide. But here are a few of my reasons why I won’t be ditching my trusty iPad 2 any time soon.

1. It’s the iPhone 4S all over again, except without Siri.

“The hype about the new iPad exceeds the new features, same as with the iPhone 4S,” comments RonSteenvoorden on this Mashable article. Overall, the announcement seems to have been met with a general sigh of boredom rather than a gasp of awe. And yet, that probably won’t stop new-to-iPad consumers from buying. After all, that’s what happened with the iPhone 4S release.

But what about Siri? Leading up to the big March 7 announcement, many speculated that the new device would include the adored Siri , Apple’s iPhone 4S Intelligent Assistant. March 7 came, and no Siri. Maybe it’s being reserved for the iPad 3. Maybe Apple wants to avoid the connection problems Siri may experience on Wi-Fi only devices. Either way, Siri is nowhere to be found, save for the built-in voice dictation software that supports English (for those in the U.S., Britain and Australia), French, German and Japanese.

2. Everyone looks silly taking photos with an iPad.

It’s a fact. (See exhibit “A.”) Silliness aside, a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera (up from the iPad 2’s 1.0-megapixel camera) is hardly enough reason alone to buy an iPad, especially when you can score a 14- or 16-megapixel digital camera for just over $100.

3. It’s heavier than the iPad 2.

I’m an iPad 2 owner. I don’t know about you, but one of my main reasons for wanting a tablet in the first place was the lightweight portability. (Because, you know, a laptop is just too heavy.) But the new iPad weighs in at 1.44 pounds. That’s up from 1.33 for the iPad 2. Sure, this point may not be my most valid. After all, it’s just 0.11 of a pound heavier. But if this is any indication, Apple’s tablets will keep getting heavier and heavier. No thanks, Apple, I’ll keep my lighter-as-a-feather iPad 2.

4. Still no Flash.

Sorry Android owners (and closeted Apple fans). The new iPad doesn’t support Adobe Flash. In fact, Flash probably won’t ever be available on iProducts, says the late Steve Jobs, among others.

5. Apple will continue to manufacture iPad 2’s. And they’re cheaper.

There’s surprise across the online community about the fact that Apple will still produce the iPad 2. The new iPad’s pricing will be identical to the iPad 2’s original pricing, starting at $499. The iPad 2 will get a new pricing scale starting at just $399. Since the iPad 2 is still a top-of-the-line piece of technology, it’s a $100-less starting point for the more frugal Apple lover.

Bottom Line: For die-hard Apple fans, the iPad’s new technical specifications may be reason enough to buy. But for those of us content to use a piece of technology for longer than a 12-month period—remember, the iPad 2 was released in March of 2011—the new iPad may not be worth the $500-plus price tag.   1. HTML 5 is already there next thing over flash. Flash will be almost obsolete in a year. Google/MS (and obviously Apple) have stated their stance on this already, supporting HTML 5 over flash.
