The Nerds Behind Credit Karma: Cathy

24 Comments | Twitter | |

Hello! It’s that fun time of the week where we introduce you to a member of the Credit Karma team. Last week, we introduced you to Jonathan, our product manager.

This week, we decided to interview Cathy, one of our analysts. Cathy’s our resident food/restaurant connoisseur, although strangely enough, when asked what sense she’d give up if she had to, she replied, “taste.” Shrug. She’s a self-professed nerd, so she probably knows what she’s talking about.

Want to learn more about Cathy? Read on!

The Interview

What’s your title at Credit Karma?

Describe in 25 words or less what you do.
I dive into our data to answer questions! Did our campaign drive new members? How do we calculate credit card approval odds?

How long have you worked at CK?
A year

What’s your favorite thing about working at CK?
The fact that we are doing good and helping people. Personal finance may be dry and boring to most people, but it’s important to educate yourself and know how your financials can affect your life. Also I am a giant nerd and only three people here make fun of me for it.

What’s your favorite snack in the CK kitchen?
Fage yogurt! And any homemade baked good.

What is something your coworkers probably don’t know about you?
In college I was a member of the steel pan group (look up Cardinal Calypso on Youtube!) and played the double tenors. It was (and continues to be) the coolest thing ever.

What was your worst subject in elementary school?
Definitely gym class – I am an uncoordinated mess.

What’s a secret (or not-so-secret) talent you have?
I’m pretty good at finding things on the internet. Like cat videos, otter videos, or my favorite, penguin videos.

If you could pick any superhero power, what would it be and why?
The power to Apparate. No more commute, no more waiting for a bus, no more security line at the airport…no more 20 hour flights!

What’s your best credit/money tip?
Make a budget, don’t spend beyond your means, and pay off your credit card every month!

Want to meet more members of the Credit Karma team?

Meet Ezra and Jonathan!

Stay tuned as we continue to reveal the nerds behind Credit Karma!

She IS quite good at finding random videos,

Jenna, Credit Karma Contributor

  1. Why does my credit score go down, when I’m paying on time and don’t have late charges? This site doesn’t seem to sometimes make sense.

Hi Fred, we get all of our scores directly from TransUnion, so we don’t have additional insight into why your score is dropping. Here’s a video on our blog explaining some of the common reasons why credit scores drop: http://blog.creditkarma.com/credit-101/credit-scores/why-did-my-credit-score-drop/

  4. I have two UP Centrl accounts showing up on my report. They both have $0 balances but I am not sure what they are and how can I get them removed?

David Pitalo at 12:56 pm on August 7, 2014
  5. Mike

Hi David – If these accounts are not yours, you can file a dispute with TransUnion to have them removed. Check out this article to learn more: https://www.creditkarma.com/article/dispute-credit-report-errors

  6. Hope with time this new version has the readability the old one had. The very worst “improvement” is the listing of my credit card info. Old way was today’s status in terms of balance credit limit and %usage. Beside it was last month reported. That 2nd part is gone. But the prettiest part (used to be) a graph of the daily balances, a red dot at the monthly credit reporting amount and a smooth line through the month to month trend. This has been replaced with a TRS-80 quality graph that is so bunched and ugly, it is hardly useful. Are you working on getting back to the level quality you had? Also the “archive” of old Transunion scores only includes 6 months. Thanks

unwanted1 – Thanks for your comment. We try to accommodate all sorts of browsers and browser versions, but eventually browser updates do become necessary. Older browsers pose problems in terms of site experience. We want to make sure the site works great for all of our members, so, if you could, updating your browser would be a step in the right direction. 10. I have a question? If you get one of the Springleaf loans to pay off accounts that are in collection, is by just acquiring this loan going to hurt my credit even more?????

And if you have a JC Penney and other retail credit lines that are at zero balance does it hurt your credit report for them to be sitting there with a zero balance? Should I close them out completely?

    Thank you so much
